Abstract:

The work has taken into account the phonology, morphology and syntax of two
dialects of the Dogri language, namely Kandi and Pahari. Dogri, an Indo-Aryan
language comes under the Western Pahari group of languages. The Western Pahari
languages are a cluster of languages which includes: Dogri-Kangri, Mandeali,
Hindhuri, Jaunsari, Mahasu, Pahari, Pangwali, Sirmauri and others. The Dogri
language is spoken by about five million people in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal
Pradesh and undivided Punjab . The whole of Jammu province, south of Pir
Panjal, some parts of Himachal Pradesh, viz. Kangra, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi,
Suket, some parts of Punjab, namely Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nurpur, Hoshiarpur
and some parts of Pakistan, viz. Shakargarh tehsil of Sialkot, comprise the
area of the Dogri language.

The main aim of the present work is to analyze the linguistic and
sociolinguistic variations of these two dialects. The two varieties of Dogri
presented here is the Kandi Dialect spoken in the Kandi regions (urban Jammu),
and the Pahari dialect spoken in the Pahari regions (rural Jammu).
