Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce that the Eleventh Conference on Syntax, Phonology
and Language Analysis (SinFonIJA 11) will be held on 11–13 October 2018 at the
Institute of English Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.

cognitive science round table discussion)

Thematic session 1: Phonology and phonetics: their relations and demarcations

The Phonology and phonetics: their relations and demarcation session,
organized in celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Sound Pattern of
English, will look into the nature of the relationship between phonetics and
phonology and the status of phonetics in the grammar, including the following
questions:

- Is there universal phonetics or is phonetics language-specific?
- How to bridge the gap between the discrete and the continuous?
- Do phonological categories have phonetic substance?
- What is the nature of the phonetics-phonology interface?
- Is phonetics about computation or interpretation?
- To what extent phonology determines phonetics?
- To what extent phonetics determines phonology?

Thematic session 2: Theoretical linguistics within cognitive science: current
research directions

There is no doubt that attempts to make direct connections between linguistic
concepts and work done in fields such as cognitive neuroscience, computational
modeling, and evolutionary and comparative biology are important and
potentially fruitful, but they also face a number of conceptual and
methodological issues. To turn the spotlight on the bidirectional connection
between linguistic theory and cognitive science and the possibilities of
progress that can be made based on collaborative work, the Theoretical
linguistics within cognitive science: current research directions session will
focus on the following issues:

- The contributions which linguistics can make to the development of other
fields within cognitive science
- The ways in which non-linguistic enterprises can inform linguistic theory
- Theoretical considerations
- Methodological issues
- Concrete cases of fruitful interaction
- Working proposals for research interaction.

The keynote and participant presentations related to this theme will be
complemented by a round table discussion on Saturday, October 13, 2018.

Final Call for Papers:

Abstracts on any topic from all areas of theoretical linguistics, comparative
linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and language acquisition
will be considered for presentation in the main session of the conference, but
we also encourage submissions relating to two special thematic sessions:
Phonology and phonetics: their relations and demarcations and Theoretical
linguistics within cognitive science: current research directions.

Important Dates:

Submission deadline: April 30, 2018
Notification of acceptance: July 15, 2018
Conference: October 11-13, 2018

We invite abstracts for 25 minute talks, followed by 5 minutes of discussion
