Job Title: Lecturer in Sociolinguistics
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Sociolinguistics

Required Language(s): German (deu)

Description:

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of
Southampton invites applications to a Lectureship (equivalent to Assistant
Professor in the US) in Sociolinguistics, available from 3rd September 2018 on
a permanent basis. Applications are invited from promising scholars in
Sociolinguistics with active research and teaching interests. Expertise in a
range of languages, especially in German, would be relevant.

You must have completed a PhD in a relevant field and show a developing
profile of international excellence in research and publications, together
with potential for attracting research funding. You will support and
contribute to the university’s REF (Research Excellence Framework) targets,
together with showing potential for attracting research funding.

You will be expected to contribute to research-led teaching, offering high
quality courses in Sociolinguistics. You will support the delivery and ongoing
development of the BA and MLang, leading undergraduate modules in
Sociolinguistics, as well as contributing to postgraduate linguistics modules
according to your specific areas of expertise: demonstrable research and
teaching experience in related fields of linguistics (for example linguistic
ethnography) will be an advantage.

Your teaching profile will complement and extend the current provision in
linguistics both for students specialising in the subject and for students
electing to take module options in the discipline. The ability to deliver
courses that engage the interest of students from diverse degree programmes is
essential. An interest in other related fields of study, such as translation
and cultural studies, would also be welcome. Experience in supervising MA and
PhD students is desirable, as this will be an important aspect of the role.

In the REF 2014, Modern Languages and Linguistics at Southampton was ranked
fifth in the UK for the quality of its research. Over the last five years,
Modern Languages and Linguistics has built and maintained a deserved
reputation as a leading centre for linguistics. Our research spans language
acquisition, linguistic theory, sociolinguistics, language pedagogy,
ethnography, history and cultural studies with particular expertise in
English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese contexts (see our website at
http://www.southampton.ac.uk/ml/).

Further enquiries about this post should be addressed to the Head of
Department, Professor Marion Demossier (M.Demossier at soton.ac.uk).
