Abstract:

Cien años de identidad [One Hundred Years of Identity] is an advanced Spanish
textbook and Latin American literature anthology, presenting 13 texts
published bewteen 1889 and 1995 from 11 authors and 2 film directors that are
designed both to introduce students to the richness of LA literature and
introduce students to literary analysis through the theme of identity. The
textbook adopts a thematic approach, focusing on key facets of literary and
cultural criticism while using the texts to build students' vocabulary and
cultural knowledge, to hone their reading and interpretive strategies, and to
boost their oral and written communication. The textbook offers a wide variety
of activities that lead students through literary analysis using a task-based
approach.

Unit themes: (1) Identity and race, ethnicity, gender, and class; (2)
Existential identity; (3) Space and time and identity; (4) Political and
sexual identity. Writers included: Isabel Allende, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio
Cortazar, Rosario Castellanos, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Ruben Dario, Carlos
Fuentes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jose Marti, Manuel Puig, and Sergio
Vodanovic. Directors: Tomas Gutierrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabio. Photos of
each author/director are included, along with some figures for use in
activities.
