processing (NLP) research related to linguistic applications such as machine
translation (MT)
- Neural MT / deep learning
- Online learning / incremental retraining
- Quality estimation and evaluation
- Improve existing NLP architecture including:
- Practical proprietary neural MT implementation (OpenNMT BRNN, transformer
models, etc.)
- Data selection, domain adaptation, named entity recognition (NER),
terminology extraction, quality estimation, and document classification
- Language-specific techniques (e.g., morphological analysis, syntax-based
approaches)
- Identifying pre- and post-processing techniques for improving translations
from black box MT systems
- Define/refine best practices when developing translation solutions and
engines for new language pairs, domains/topics and content types
- Work with the software engineering team to turn research techniques into
practical commercial solutions
- Work on broader considerations of practical MT use, e.g. file processing,
tag handling, data cleaning, and translation efficiency
- Lead the implementation of end-to-end projects for new clients
- Develop tools that help streamline workflows and productivity for both
internal and external customers

Technical Skills and Experience:
- MSc or PhD in Computational Linguistics or similar discipline
- Commercial experience in NLP/computational linguistics and/or machine
learning
- Strong knowledge of core NLP approaches
- Knowledge of latest trends in machine learning (ML) & artificial
intelligence (AI)
- Extensive experience with MT (both statistical and neural)
- Strong object-oriented programming skills (Python and/or Java)
- Experience with version control packages (Git preferred)
- Comfortable with working in a Linux environment

The following skills are not strictly necessary for the role but would be a
plus:
- Hands-on experience working and developing with open source tools such as
Moses, Giza++, and other common NLP packages
- NLP experience with a language other than English (particularly Asian
languages)
- Experience with AWS and/or Azure
- Experience with Docker or similar virtualisation platform
- Experience with phonetic transcription and TTS engines
- Familiarity with tools and processes in a localization workflow such as
translation management tools, post-editing, and translation evaluation
