Description:

Lancaster University is advertising a three-year PhD studentship in phonetics,
based in the Department of Linguistics and English Language. The studentship
is fully funded, including course fees and a maintenance grant of £15,000 per
year, for a duration of three years. It is open to UK, EU and overseas
students. The deadline for applications is 1 March 2019 and the PhD would
ideally start in October 2019.

This studentship is targeted towards projects in articulatory sociophonetics,
using instrumentation such as EMA or ultrasound to investigate speech (topics
could include dialect variation, sound change, bilingualism, language contact,
phonological typology, etc). Potential applicants are encouraged to contact
Sam Kirkham (s.kirkham at lancaster.ac.uk) to express their interest and discuss
project ideas.

About the research group:
Lancaster University Phonetics Lab is a research group with 4 full-time
academics and 7 PhD students. The group has a dedicated lab space, which
includes a sound-attenuated booth and facilities for vocal tract imaging and
articulatory measurement, including electromagnetic articulography (EMA),
high-speed ultrasound, electropalatography and electroglottography. For more
