Call for Proposals:

Teaching Language and Content in Multilingual Classrooms: CLIL and EMI
Approaches

Editors:
María Luisa Carrió-Pastor (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain)
Begoña Bellés Fortuño (Universitat Jaume I, Spain)

Introduction and Scope:

Content-based instruction (CBI) programmes such as Content and Language
Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) are
increasingly popular. These have allowed for extensive experimentation in the
realm of second or foreign language teaching and learning and have been at the
centre of many research agendas (Dalton-Puffer, 2005; Barwell, 2005; Ruiz de
Zarobe, 2007; Doiz, Lasagabaster, and Sierra (eds.), 2013; Tsou and Kao
(eds.), 2017; Macaro, 2018; Carrió-Pastor (ed.), in press). English has gained
an important role in different spheres of life over the last decades. Because
of this, EMI and CLIL teaching in secondary and higher education are of
interest for many researchers focused on language teaching. The truth is that
the concepts of CLIL and EMI have enhanced the innovation of classroom
pedagogies in content subjects alongside language teaching.
In this vein, this edited volume seeks to take up this call for a broad
approach, both illuminating the potential of CLIL and EMI to address
long-standing challenges in foreign language teaching, and mobilizing research
on teaching to expand the theoretical and methodological repertoires of CLIL
and EMI.

Researchers are invited to submit proposals focusing on teacher education and
professional development for immersion and content‐based language education.
Any manuscript submitted should be original and not have been previously
published or currently be under review elsewhere.

Recommended topics for submissions are:

- The challenges of content based instruction.
- The implications of teaching CLIL and EMI, the need of teacher training.
- New practices in the teaching of CLIL and EMI in the classroom.
- Intercultural experiences in multilingual programmes.

Submission Instructions:

The editor welcomes proposal submissions by 25th January 2019. Proposals
should contain the following information:

- Proposed chapter title
- Author name(s) and affiliation(s)
- 500-600 word chapter overview
- 50-100 word biography for each author

Proposals should be saved as a single Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), text
(.txt), or .PDF file, and emailed as attachments to lcarrio at upv.es. Authors of
accepted proposals will be notified by 20 February 2019.

This volume has been discussed in detail with an internationally reputable
publisher. Following the selection of proposals, a full book proposal will be
sent to the publisher. Upon acceptance, chapter authors will be sent detailed
guidelines. Authors will be given approximately 6 months to contribute full
chapters of circa 8,000 words. Chapters must be original, and should not be
submitted for publication elsewhere. All chapters will be double-blind peer
reviewed.
