Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester invites
applications for the MA program in Linguistics, MA program in Language
Documentation and Description and the MS program in Computational Linguistics.
Each 32-credit program can be completed in 3 semesters (plus an optional
additional semester for thesis/project research). Note: A tuition award (for
reduced tuition) is available for the strongest applicants.

1. Master of Arts in Linguistics
(http://www.sas.rochester.edu/lin/graduate/master.html)
The Linguistics MA program provides students with a solid foundation in all of
the core areas of linguistics, including: Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology,
Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics. Additional advanced courses provide depth and
enrichment in one or more specific areas of linguistics, with a focus on both
theoretical/formal and experimental/empirical linguistics. The MA in
linguistics prepares students for further work at the PhD level in linguistics
or related fields, or for employment in teaching or industry.

2. Master of Arts in Language Documentation and Description
(http://www.sas.rochester.edu/lin/graduate/LDD.html)
Language documentation encompasses the collection of naturally occurring as
well as experimentally elicited primary data, such as video and audio
recordings and written language data; language description uses this and other
sources of data to analyze the language. Together, language documentation and
description efforts can provide the bases for language grammars, dictionary
projects, education and language revitalization materials, and the building of
large language corpora. Emerging technologies provide new tools for the
analysis of sophisticated language data. Our program aims to provide students
with the preparation needed to embark on language documentation and
description projects and also to be prepared with skills transferable to other
fields where the collection and analysis of complex language data may be
relevant. For students with a sufficient linguistics background, we offer the
possibility of a research track and/or applying for a fieldwork grant.

3. Master of Science in Computational Linguistics
(http://www.sas.rochester.edu/lin/graduate/MS.html)
The Computational Linguistics MS program trains students to be conversant both
in the analysis of language and in computational techniques applied to natural
language. The curriculum consists of courses in Linguistics and Computer
Science, in roughly a 50/50 mix, for a total of 32 credit hours. Graduates
from the Computational Linguistics MS program will be prepared for both
further training at the PhD level in Computer Science and Linguistics and
Computational Linguistics positions in industry.

To apply, follow instructions here:
http://www.sas.rochester.edu/lin/graduate/apply.html. We look for students
with strong academic records who show breadth and depth of interests, and the
potential for creativity in pursuing a successful linguistics program. A
background in linguistics is desirable but not necessary.

For fullest consideration applicants should submit completed applications by
February 1. All documents should be uploaded online. Applications should
include Official Transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, a
statement of purpose, a writing sample, and TOEFL or IELTS scores for those
applicants whose native language is other than English.

Application materials should be uploaded here:
https://apply.grad.rochester.edu/apply/ . To receive an application fee-waiver
please go here:
