Call Deadline: 20-Jan-2019

Meeting Description:

LandLex is an international research group committed to exploring vocabulary
of the landscape on a cross-linguistic, diachronic and synchronic level. This
colloquium is dedicated to getting more linguists interested in the work of
LandLex and also focus on future perspectives of landscape lexicography in the
digital age.

Call for Papers:

Denominations of objects in the natural environment of human beings, for
example plants and terrains, are an important point of access when exploring
linguistically manifested commonalities and differences in Europe that are
culturally and social-historically based. As a fundamental human behavioural
pattern, the interaction with the environment is significantly reflected in
the lexicon. Thus, evaluating lexicographic resources of different languages
from a diachronic perspective means accessing a huge inventory of information,
which, in a structured overview, enables us to gain knowledge on
cultural-historically meaningful relations, commonalities and differences in
words from different languages that relate to the landscape.

>From 23–25 May 2019, the international research group LandLex (= Landscape &
Lexicography) will hold the colloquium “(Historical) Lexicography of the
Landscape and the Digital Age”, hosted by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences
and Humanities. The event addresses researchers interested in cross-linguistic
research on words related to the landscape from a diachronic perspective. The
aim is to promote a productive exchange of different analysis methods and
perspectives, e.g. exploring borrowings and language contacts, approaches on
naming theory or research on Europeanisms. We especially welcome contributions
that focus on the possibilities of digital humanities in projects with a
cross-linguistic approach.

In principle, submissions should relate to words or expressions from the realm
of “landscape” (e.g. denominations for plants and waters etc.). Possible
topics are:
- borrowings in the European language area (on a semantic and/or morphological
level)
- comparative linguistics
- Europeanisms
- cultural relations and their reflections in the lexicon
- cultural-historical aspects
- approaches in naming theory

Please submit your abstract (max. 300 words) in German or English by
20.01.2019 to:

Dr. Yvonne Luther, Frühneuhochdeutsches Wörterbuch, Göttingen Academy of
Sciences and Humanities Akademie, yluther at gwdg.de

Wiebke Blanck M.A., European Master in Lexicography, German Department at
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, wiebke.blanck at fau.de

Please note that presentations must be held in English (duration: 25 min).
Also, please contact us if you have any questions.
