Meeting Description:

The Transformation of News Discourse in the Age of Social Media
(Panel S12 at the ESSE 2018 conference)

Convenors: Jan Chovanec, Masaryk University, Brno, chovanec at phil.muni.cz,
Roberta Facchinetti, University of Verona, roberta.facchinetti at univr.it

Over the past few years, the emergence and the development of first and second
generation social media have profoundly affected not only interpersonal
communication but also the various forms of traditional media. This has
resulted in the transformation of existing media genres, as well as the
development of new formats of mass-mediated communication. In many respects,
this situation has led to the dilution of the boundaries between
public/private, mainstream/fringe, news/entertainment, reporting/commentary,
information/evaluation, etc. In this panel, we wish to investigate the mutual
relationship between news and social media, with a focus on the discursive
realization of diverse linguistic and interactional phenomena related –among
others –to recontextualization, resemioticization and remediation of content.
Theoretically, the papers will be based in media discourse analysis,
sociolinguistics and interactional pragmatics, discussing synchronic and
potentially also diachronic aspects of news media genre change.
