Short Title: LRI 4

Date: 07-Jun-2018 - 08-Jun-2018
Location: Merano, Italy
Contact Person: Aivars Glaznieks
Meeting Email: lri at eurac.edu
Web Site: http://www.lri.eurac.edu

Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Language Documentation; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Feb-2018

Meeting Description:

The colloquium aims to foster scientific exchanges within the Alpine region
and beyond. It is specifically targeted at young researchers (PhD students and
post-docs). The colloquia, jointly organised by six universities and research
centres in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, intend to offer a forum
for discussing current and recently concluded projects. The yearly editions
are organised around three keywords: language, region and identity. The
different languages and language varieties that we speak, together with the
place where we were born, grew up and where we live, are in fact important and
interdependent factors that make up our identity. In language interactions,
these factors play a key role in the processes of distinguishing and
identifying with other interlocutors. The colloquia intend to offer a forum
for discussing current and recently concluded projects concerning these
aspects. Each Linguistic Colloquium workshop has a specific topic of interest.

The topic of the 4th edition of the workshop will be: Language Policy –
Language Use – Language Standard

Confirmed keynote speakers:

- Andrea Ender (University of Salzburg)
- Christoph Purschke (University of Luxembourg)

2nd Call for Papers:

Following the successful workshops in Merano/Meran (Italy) in 2014 and 2015,
and in Innsbruck (Austria) in 2016, the 4th workshop for young academics of
the linguistic colloquium ''Language, Region, Identity'' (LRI) will be hosted
at the Villa San Marco, Merano/Meran (Italy). The workshop, jointly organised
by six universities and research centres in Austria, Germany, Italy, and
Switzerland, aims to foster scientific exchanges within the Alpine region and
beyond by offering a forum for discussing current and recently concluded
projects. The workshop will feature oral presentations of 20 minutes with a
subsequent discussion time of 10 min.

Each Linguistic Colloquium workshop has a specific topic of interest. The 4th
edition will address the topics of language policy, language use and language
standard. We welcome contributions that deal with current discussions in
language policies (e.g. in education), that focus on contemporary language use
(e.g. in the new media) and that discuss language standards and varieties. In
particular, we encourage submissions that focus on either internal or external
multilingualism. Different languages and varieties as well as the diversity of
dialects in the Alpine region will provide the focal points of the workshop.
However, the workshop is also open to related topics.
