Description:

One Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) is available at the Center for
Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan (MultiLing) at the Department
of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo (UiO), starting in
August 2018.

MultiLing aims to generate scientific knowledge on multilingualism across the
lifespan, related to three themes: Individual multilingual competence,
multilingual language practices, and management of multilingualism in society
(for more information, see http://www.hf.uio.no/multiling/). MultiLing plans
to further strengthen its research portfolio by enhancing the focus on the
dimensions of education, technology, and Norway’s societal diversity; each of
these dimensions intersect all three themes.

MultiLing seeks to recruit a doctoral candidate with excellent research
qualifications who will work with members of the team on one of three research
projects, funded by the University of Oslo’s investment in developing
world-leading research communities:
-Studies of multilingual aphasia
-Multilingualism and mediated communication
-Multilingualism and globalization: Perspectives from Norway

Applicants are expected to present an independent research project proposal
relevant for one of the research projects listed above. The applicant must
explain how the project is relevant for the chosen MultiLing project. Projects
are expected to incorporate one or more of the dimensions of education
(broadly defined, including learning), technology, and Norway’s societal
diversity.

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the relevant research areas
addressed above, to contribute to and participate in the various workshops,
conferences and activities organized by MultiLing, and to be an active member
of the MultiLing team in Oslo.

The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organized research
training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be
defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The
successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or
network and contribute to its development. Read more about the doctoral
degree.

The appointment is for a duration of three years. All PhD Candidates who
submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment along with a written
recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the
start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month
Completion Grant.

Qualifications:
- Master's Degree or equivalent in linguistics, Scandinavian languages,
rhetorics and communication, psychology or other disciplines relevant for the
individual project. The Master's Degree must have been obtained by the time of
application.
-Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
-The project's scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
-The applicant's estimated academic and personal ability to complete the
project within the time frame
-The applicant's ability to complete research training
-Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic
communities
Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given
preference.
