Department: Languages & Linguistics
Job Location: Texas, USA
Web Address: https://academics.utep.edu/Default.aspx?alias=academics.utep.edu/langling
Job Title: Visiting Assistant Professor
Job Rank: Visiting Professor

Specialty Areas: Phonology

Description:

The Linguistics Program within the Department of Languages & Linguistics at
The University of Texas at El Paso invites applications for a Visiting
Assistant Professor of Phonology beginning in Fall ’18. The successful
applicant should have an active research agenda in current topics in
theoretical phonology, as well as evidence of teaching success. Since the
graduate program offers a concentration in Hispanic Linguistics, acquaintance
with issues in Hispanic phonology is a significant plus. Additional expertise
in one of the following areas is also highly desirable: psycholinguistics,
bilingualism, computational linguistics, Romance linguistics, experimental
phonology, historical linguistics, first language acquisition, second language
acquisition, language variation. This position opening is in response to a
recent retirement. Since phonology is one of the core areas of linguistics
and essential to a complete linguistics curriculum, we anticipate that the
position will develop into a tenure track position, and we seek applicants who
would be strong competitors for such a position.

Please send a letter of interest, a cv and three letters of recommendation
(preferably in pdf format), to Prof. Nick Sobin at the email address below by
16 February, 2018 for full consideration. The University of Texas at El Paso
is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. The University does not
discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age,
disability, genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender
identity in employment or in the provision of services.

Linguistics at UTEP has existed as a program or department since 1966. UTEP
is one of only a limited number of universities in the USA to have both
undergraduate and graduate linguistics degree programs. UTEP is even more
unique in having an undergraduate student body which, being largely bilingual,
brings to the study of linguistics a very sophisticated language background.
(Such bilingualism is relatively rare in the USA.) Also, UTEP is situated in
the heart of the largest bi-national urban area in the world. Therefore it
provides a potential goldmine of possible research topics related to language,
language learning, bilingualism, and the links between language and culture.
The Linguistics Program has active connections with other academic programs
including psychology, speech pathology, and sociology/anthropology.
Linguistics faculty participate in UTEP’s Consortium for Scientific Research
on Bilingualism (https://research.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=75980). Other
Universities in the region which have notable linguistics programs include the
University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and the University of New
Mexico.
