University or Organization: University of Canterbury
Department: School of Language, Social and Political Sciences
Job Location: Christchurch, New Zealand
Web Address: http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/
Job Title: Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Linguistics
Job Rank: Lecturer

Specialty Areas: Forensic Linguistics; General Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer within
the Department of Linguistics in the School of Language, Social and Political
Sciences to lead and contribute to teaching in Linguistics, and to conduct
research.

The successful applicant will teach syntax at undergraduate and graduate
levels, including thesis supervision. We particularly encourage applications
from candidates who approach syntactic theory development from a strong
empirical perspective, for example using methodologies such as corpus
evidence, fieldwork, computational modelling or experimentation. Expertise in
another area of linguistics, such as forensic linguistics, corpus linguistics,
or first/second language acquisition is also desirable.

The successful applicant will also be expected to conduct research, and to
apply for external research funding.

Candidates should be excellent teachers at both the undergraduate and
postgraduate levels, and be comfortable and effective with large as well as
small classes. Candidates should also have a proven track record of research,
commensurate with their experience.

The Linguistics Department offers courses in the core areas of linguistics for
the three-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Postgraduate
teaching includes courses for the Bachelor of Arts Honours degree by
coursework, the Master of Linguistics, and the Master of Arts and Doctor of
Philosophy degrees by thesis.

The Linguistics Department is closely affiliated with The New Zealand
Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB), a multi-disciplinary
centre dedicated to the study of human language. The researchers come from a
wide range of disciplines, forging connections across linguistics, speech
production and perception, language acquisition, language disorders, social
cognition, memory, brain imaging, cognitive science, bilingual education, and
interface technologies. This highly interdisciplinary team is working together
toward a truly unified understanding of how language is acquired, produced and
understood in its social and physical contexts.

The University of Canterbury is committed to promoting a world-class learning
environment through research and teaching excellence, and has a vision
statement of 'People Prepared to Make a Difference'. You will have the
opportunity to work alongside members of a diverse academic community and
enrich your own professional and personal development.
