Description:

We welcome applications for a full-time position as doctoral researcher in the
Department of Translation, Interpreting & Communication at Ghent University,
in the Research Centre for Multilingual Practices and Language Learning in
Society (MULTIPLES). The PhD student will be working on the project “Speech
Intelligibility and foreign accent: New perspectives on the perception of
Dutch as a Foreign Language”. The starting date is subject to negotiation, but
will fall between 1 April and 1 October 2018. The project runs over a period
of 4 years.

Project description:
The project is situated in the field of language acquisition, and more
specifically in the domain of foreign language phonology. The focus is on
Dutch as a Foreign Language. The project will comprise an analysis of the
Dutch speech of non-native speakers and will provide insights into the
concepts of ‘speech intelligibility’ and ‘foreign accent’. Intelligibility is
often named as the key objective in foreign language education, yet it is ill
understood exactly which properties make speech intelligible or not. On the
basis of experiments, the project will examine which acoustic-phonetic cues
have an influence on the intelligibility of non-native (Dutch) speech, and on
the extent to which this speech is perceived as foreign accented. In addition,
the project will map listeners’ attitudes towards non-native speech samples
differing in the degree of intelligibility and accentedness. The project will
contribute to the field of Dutch as a Foreign Language, and has implications
for language education (and language testing practices).
