Meeting Description:

This year’s edition of the Annual Conference dedicated to Romanian Studies at
the University of Lisbon aims to explore the long-term debated, nonetheless
always intriguing and challenging topic of myths, folktales and legends.
Translation here is meant to be looked at both as an instrument of bringing to
people’s knowledge hidden treasures of various cultures and subcultures and
also as a revealing process that allows for interpretation and validation of
humanity’s universal values in spite of the apparently different forms and
shapes employed in the various world cultures.

Call for Papers:

The conference mainly focuses on, but is by no means limited to, “translating”
myths, folktales and legends from and into Romanian culture and literature.
Nevertheless, presentations on myths, folktales and legends in various other
cultures or contributions drawing on cultural manifestations of universal
stories are also most welcome, given the fact that the overarching objective
of the annual editions of the present conference is a better positioning and
knowledge of Romanian culture and language abroad, integrated within and
connected to the whole world. The conference, thus, aims at offering a space
of academic debate and exchange on the “literature of the spirit” that is
expected to result in well-documented and inspiring presentations that bring
various scholars and cultural milieus together; additionally, at a more
general level, it is expected to shed light on deep, universal human values
that give genuine meaning to life.

As a result, we invite presentations that reflect upon myths, folktales and
legends from one or more of the following perspectives (or others considered
pertinent):

- “translating” their persuasive force
- Their functioning as models of life and behavior and how these models are
“translated” cross-culturally and inter-generationally
- Their simultaneously old and contemporary nature
- Their transposition and transduction across the arts
- Their employment and representation in other non-canonical domains
(economics, politics etc.)
- Their linguistic representation and semiotic interpretation
- Their relationship to conceptual metaphors
- etc.

This year’s edition of the Conference will be the central event of the
Romanian Cultural Week in Lisbon (7 – 11 May), a series of events meant to
disseminate Romanian culture and language in Portugal and abroad in 2018 when
the Romanian national state celebrates 100 years of existence. More details
will soon be released.
