Description:

The Department of Linguistics, section “Historical and Comparative
Linguistics” at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of
Cologne invites applications for a PhD position starting on the 1st October
2018. 

The contract is a fixed-term work contract ending on the 30th of September
2021. The position offered is part time (50%, 19.92 hours per week), and is
remunerated in accordance with the German university pay grade 13 TV-L.

Activity description: 
The appointee carries out research for a doctoral project that contributes to
current investigations on pragmatic and/or cognitive aspects of literary
texts, under the supervision of Prof. Anna Bonifazi. Research activities may
focus on ancient Greek literature or on comparative analyses encompassing
other ancient IE languages or modern languages. Topics may include, among
others, the pragmatics and/or cognitive poetics of individual grammatical
features/constructions, the interface between syntax, prosody, and pragmatics
in the segmentation of discourse, the influence of oral traditions in shaping
literary genres, the intersection between language and its performative
dimension, and literary multimodality.  

The student will participate in scientific activities and events organized at
the University of Cologne, within Germany, and abroad. S/he may be involved in
the elaboration and/or implementation of larger research projects.   
 
S/he will teach one BA seminar per semester and help carry out some
administrative work. 

Profile:
The appointee works efficiently, familiarizes herself/himself quickly with new
lines of research, and is a good team player.

Required qualifications:
- Master in classics or historical linguistics or comparative linguistics or
comparative literature;
- Interest in interdisciplinary research;
- Good knowledge of pragmatics and/or cognitive linguistics, or strong
interest in profitably learning pragmatic and cognitive frameworks; 
- Very good command of spoken and written English.
