Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Sanskrit Syntax (2 posts)
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Syntax

Required Language(s): Sanskrit (san)

Description:

Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.

Dr John Lowe has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant for
the project ‘Uncovering Sanskrit Syntax’, for which two postdoctoral research
assistants in Sanskrit Syntax are sought. The postholders will report to the
Principal Investigator, Dr John Lowe, and under his direction will undertake
research and corpus-based data collection on Sanskrit texts, in order to
establish a comprehensive understanding of the syntax of Sanskrit. The two
posts will concentrate on different corpora; for example, one post may focus
on Epic and Puranic Sanskrit, while the other may focus on Vedic Prose and
Classical literary Sanskrit, depending on the expertise and interests of the
postholders.

The postholders, who will hold a doctorate in Sanskrit and/or Linguistics,
will manage their own academic research and administrative activities within
the context of the Uncovering Sanskrit Syntax project, as directed by the PI.
This will involve responsibility for project managing distinct subcomponents
of the overall project, and co-ordinating multiple aspects of the work with
other project members to meet deadlines. They will be expected to adapt
existing and develop new research methodologies for analysing the syntax of
Sanskrit texts; prepare working theories and analyse qualitative and
quantitative data from varied Sanskrit corpora, and review and refine theories
as appropriate based on that data; and act as a source of information and
advice to other members of the group on specific features of particular
Sanskrit corpora and/or on theoretical linguistic issues.

This post is fixed-term (3 years) funded by an external research grant from
the Leverhulme Trust.

The posts will be based at the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics
at the Clarendon Institute, Walton Street, Oxford, OX1 2HG.
