Description:

The research group of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona on
Compositionality of meaning and, in particular, on The Interpretation of
Functional Categories (FFI2017-82547-P) invites applications for a four-year
predoctoral fellowship of the program “Contratos Predoctorales para la
Formación de Doctores”, funded by the Spanish Government.

The central topic of this research will be to investigate whether there are
functional categories that are semantically expletive, a hypothesis that has
been postulated in the literature at least for Det (e.g., the article that
precedes proper names in certain Romance languages), Neg (e.g., the negative
marker that appears in complement position of certain comparatives and
specific predicates), and Voice (e.g., the clitic se in anticausatives). We
aim at investigating what are the implications of such potential expletiveness
across functional categories for a general theory of grammar.

The predoctoral fellow will become a member of the above mentioned project, at
the Centre de Lingüística Teòrica (http://filcat.uab.cat/clt/), where (s)he
will be hosted. (S)he will also enroll in the Cognitive Science and Language
interuniversity PhD program at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
(http://www.uab.cat/web/postgraduate/phds/all-phd-programmes/general-informati
on/cognitive-science-and-language-1345467765430.html?param2=1345674110692).

Applicants must hold a grade in Linguistics. Those who are interested, please
send to: Teresa.Espinal at uab.cat or Xavier.Villalba at uab.cat by September 14,
2018 a .pdf file containing the following items (in the order listed):
- A cover letter with a brief expression of interest, which should contain the
schema of the project to be developed in the four years;
- A detailed academic curriculum vitae with the scores obtained in the
Linguistics training, and
- Two reference letters.

Please include “predoctoral fellowship” in the email subject line.

Preselected candidates will then be requested to provide a detailed work-plan
for a maximum of a four-year period, and to fill up the application form as
soon as the call for “Ayudas para contratos predoctorales para la formación de
doctors 2018” is open in the official site.
