Description:

CRASSH is seeking to appoint two highly motivated and enthusiastic Research
Associates (RA) to join the four- year project Giving Voice to Digital
Democracies: The Social Impact of Artificially Intelligent Communications
Technology (based at CRASSH), led by Professor Ian Roberts.

The project explores the social changes caused by Artificial Intelligence (AI)
and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in modern digital
democracies. The focus is on technologies at the intersection of AI and ICT
(AICT), specifically speech technology, natural language processing, smart
telecommunications and social media. The aim is to elaborate on an applied
ethics of AICT that facilitates the development of systems that are more
trustworthy, accurate, unbiased and transparent. The project provides a unique
opportunity to determine how existing AICT-based infrastructures can be
reconfigured to enable these technologies to change society for the better.
The two RAs will work collaboratively and with the Principal Investigator,
Co-Investigators and Project Manager on their relevant research areas. In
addition to undertaking their own research, the RAs will participate in work-
in-progress project meetings and events, as well as assist in the organisation
of those events. They will also share responsibility for editing project
outputs and contributing to the project website.

The successful applicants will hold a good first degree, and a PhD, in a
relevant subject area. Applicants who have not yet obtained their PhD may be
considered but they must have submitted their thesis before the start date.
They will have expertise in at least one field such as Ethics, Philosophy of
Science, Philosophy of Language, Sociology, Sociolinguistics, Speech
Technology, Computational Linguistics, and/or Law. Applicants will be expected
to provide evidence of the ability to organise and participate in
collaborative research initiatives, and in presenting research findings to a
scholarly audience.

While the posts will be based in Cambridge, applicants must be willing to
travel both within the UK and abroad as required.

Start date is 1 October 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter

Fixed-term: 
Funding for this post is available until 30 September 2022, in the first
instance.
