Meeting Description:

As we face increasingly uncertain times, we, at SIETAR Japan, believe in the
importance of strengthening intercultural connections now more than ever. We
invite you to join us in Tokyo from August 7 - 11, 2018 so that we may embark
on this important journey together.

We are excited that we are hosting the SIETAR Japan World Congress which is
our second international conference—our first one was in 1998! So this is a
big deal. Our annual conference is usually two days, but the World Congress
spans over four days. We have an exciting lineup of keynote speakers including
Dr. Kumiko Torikai, a pioneer in the field of English education in Japan, Dr.
Peter Coleman, a foremost expert on conflict resolution and Professor Clifford
Clarke, one of the founding fathers of our field. Our Master Workshops provide
a special opportunity for participants to learn from various experts. Dr.
Peter Coleman will be hosting two workshops on Conflict Resolution. Mr.
Masahiro Nomoto and Dr. Kaoru Yamamoto will facilitate a workshop on
understanding conflict and communication through the traditional Japanese
martial art of Kobudo. Mr. Tetsuro Miyazaki, will host a workshop on the
identities of biracial and multiracial children. During the congress we will
have parallel sessions consisting of over 100 research presentations,
symposiums, workshops, poster sessions, and film screenings. We will also have
roundtable lunch discussions during which participants can meet one another
and share ideas. We also have a pre-conference fieldtrip (on August 7) in
which we will learn about the Ainu, the indigenous peoples of Japan and other
ways to experience Japanese tea ceremony and other traditional culture
firsthand.

SIETAR Japan is a bilingual (Japanese and English) organization that seeks to
promote and facilitate intercultural communication in the areas of education,
training and research through monthly lectures and workshops, special interest
group meetings, annual conferences, retreats, and social gatherings. Members
are from diverse disciplines (intercultural communications, linguistics,
TESOL, psychology, sociology, literature, media studies, etc.) and
backgrounds, and we interact and learn from one another to become better
facilitators and educators in the intercultural communications field in both
academia and the corporate worlds.

Chuo University is located in western Tokyo, away from the hustle and bustle
of city life. It is only a thirty-minute train ride to beautiful Mt. Takao,
less than an hour away from Shinjuku station, and a little over an hour away
from the beautiful mountains and rivers of Oku-Tama.
On August 7 we welcome you to Chuo University’s Tama Campus! We encourage you
to come to Japan earlier to travel and absorb the culture (and the heat!)
prior to the conference.

Makiko Deguchi, President of SIETAR Japan
