Subject: Obituary: Jean ''J.C.'' Casagrande

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Jean “J.C.” Casagrande,
on June 10, 2018, in Gainesville, Florida.

Dr. Casagrande was born in Oran, Algeria in 1938 and came to the United States
at the age of 19. He became a U.S. citizen following his service in the U.S.
Army. He did his undergraduate work at the University of South Florida, where
he met his wife, Juanita. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in French
Linguistics at Indiana University. In 1968, he started as an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Florida,
where he worked until his retirement in 2003. He twice served as the director
of the Program in Linguistics at UF. He was the director of UF’s English
Language Institute from 1984 to 2003. He considered the strengthening and
promoting of the ELI to be among the most important things he accomplished in
his career at UF. Dr. Casagrande always believed that learning the languages
and cultures of other countries was one of the keys to the promotion of peace
in the world.

Dr. Casagrande’s best-known work is his 1984 book ''The Sound System of
French''. Dr. Casagrande, along with his colleague Dr. Bohdan Saciuk, started
the conference Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL) in February
1971. It continues to meet to this day, and returned to UF in 2000 to
celebrate its 30th anniversary under his direction. He also served as
co-director of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) Summer Institute in
Tampa in 1975 and held visiting professorships at the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill, the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the
University of Surrey in the UK. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of
Downtown Gainesville and Rotary International.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Faith Catholic Church, 747 NW 43rd
Street, Gainesville, Florida on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11:30am. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Jean “J.C.” Casagrande Memorial
Scholarship, Dept. of Linguistics, P.O. Box 115454, Gainesville, Florida 32611
or your favorite charity.
