Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Meeting Description:

The topic of this year's University of Maryland Mayfest is negation, a
universal property of natural language. We will bring together a diverse array
of researchers who will offer complementary and competing viewpoints on the
study of this basic cognitive concept.

We have invited distinguished researchers in syntax, semantics, processing,
and acquisition to foster discussion on the following issues: What is the
nature and licensing of negative expressions, such as NPIs and neg-words? How
is negation processed online? How can studying negation shed light on
acquisition and language change? Finally, can we use insights from negation to
shed light on other parts of the grammar?

Mayfest will take place May 4-5, 2018, at the University of Maryland, College
Park. The event is free and all are welcome.

The schedule will be posted on the NayFest website as the conference
approaches.

Invited speakers:

Theresa Biberauer (University of Cambridge)
Emmanuel Chemla (Ecole Normale Supérieure - Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives
et Psycholinguistique)
Jon Gajewski (University of Connecticut)
Chung-hye Han (Simon Fraser University)
Elena Herburger (Georgetown University)
Laurence R. Horn (Yale University)
Ivy Sichel (University of California, Santa Cruz)
Ming Xiang (University of Chicago)
Hedde Zeijlstra (University of Göttingen)
