Meeting Description:

Call for Papers:

Section ''Grammatical phenomena of Heritage Spanish'' (Natascha Pomino &
Katrin Schmitz, University of Wuppertal)

Heritage speakers (HS) are typically children of immigrants who are born in
the host country or who arrived in the host country in early childhood (= 2nd
or 3rd generation). They thus become early bilinguals, because they are
exposed to the heritage language (HL) (i.e. the language spoken at home by the
first generation which is crucially not the language of the surrounding) and
the majority language (i.e. the language outside the family) since birth (=
simultaneous bilinguals) or at least in early childhood (= sequential
bilinguals). After several decades of intense research with Spanish as a HL
(particularly in the US) and the still ongoing discussion regarding its
(incomplete) acquisition, we think that the moment has come to take another
perspective, originally proposed by Acrisio Pires in 2011, namely the
investigation of HL as independent linguistic systems.

The leading terms constellations, networks and transformations of the XXII.
Deutsche Hispanistentag can be associated in many ways to the focus of the
proposed section and related to interesting questions: Which constellations
are present in heritage languages and which effect does the specific language
constellation (e.g., Spanish/German, Spanish/English) have on the very same
language (e.g., Spanish)? Which changes (i.e. transformations) in the
linguistic system can be related to the specific language constellations and
how can they be analyzed? How do heritage speakers act linguistically within
their linguistic community (i.e. within a social network)? Do they have a
proper code or do they speak in the same way outside of their community?
In this vein, we would like to suggest a section where grammatical phenomena
from the domains of syntax, morphology and phonology of Spanish heritage
language(s) are investigated, taking the following possible approaches:

- Comparative descriptions and formal analyses of various grammatical
phenomena in the HL Spanish in one language constellation (if possible, in the
same speakers or across age groups)
- Comparison of chosen phenomena in Heritage Spanish with other Romance HL
(e.g. Heritage Italian, Portuguese, Romanian)
- Comparison of chosen phenomena in Heritage Spanish in different combinations
with various majority languages (e.g. Spanish/German in comparison to the much
investigated combination of heritage Spanish and English)

The above mentioned approaches may enrich the heritage language research with
important new knowledge concerning particular properties of the language
systems of Spanish (and other Romance) heritage languages and their
development and maintenance in various constellations. Such a consideration
might also allow to get a deeper/new understanding of earlier or ongoing
processes of language change in Spanish varieties. We strongly welcome
contributions on Spanish or other Romance heritage languages that support or
discuss one of these approaches. The language of the talks may be German,
Spanish or English.

We kindly ask for contributions until July 31, 2018 via the URL of the
organization system of the Hispanistentag:
https://www.conftool.com/hispanistentag2019 . We will inform about the
acceptance or refusal by August 31, 2018.
