Open Access Special Issue on Language Variation

Editors:
Külli Habicht; Tiit Hennoste; Helle Metslang
Variation is an universal phenomenon which permeates language, culture, and
society. We are inviting papers discussing issues specific and common to
linguistic variation and its various subtypes, as well as the intersections of
and relationships between different types of variation.
The compilation of this special issue is motivated by the conference
''Variation in language, literature and folklore'' which took place in Tartu,
Estonia on December 7-8, 2017. We welcome contributions based on conference
presentations as well as new studies.

We expect papers on different aspects of variation, for example:
- Synchronic and diachronic variation, levels of variation (individual, local,
regional, historical), comparison of variants (registers, dialects, genres)
- Interplay of linguistic variation and variation in folklore and literature
- Intralinguistic factors in linguistic variation (e.g. system constraints,
regularities of linguistic changes)
- Extralinguistic factors in linguistic variation (e.g. extralinguistic
context of language varieties, contacts with other languages and language
varieties, language planning)
- Reciprocal effects of language standardization and actual language use
- Data-related problems (insufficient data, large and small databases,
so-called bad data)
- Methods for studying variation

The deadline for submissions is May 31st, 2018.
