Meeting Description:

Much research has been focused on spatial language, analyzing the rich inner
structure of spatial categories and the methodology for their description. On
the one hand, there are approaches assuming spatial language as geometrically
constrained (Landau & Jackendoff, 1993). On the other hand, there are
approaches assuming impacts of everyday spatial routines and patterns of
interactions as primary in respect to geometry. E.g.,  functional-geometric
approach (Coventry & Garrod, 2004) and studies consistent with it (Gardenfors,
2014; Vandeloise, 1994; Hawkins, 1984) posit interplay between linguistic and
perceptual systems grounding spatial language in perception and action, viz.,
in addition to topological and geometric factors it also includes
extrageometric information, which consists of dynamic-kinematic routines and
our knowledge about objects and their interaction (Coventry & Garrod, 2004,
55).
In our workshop, we will discuss the ways geometric, topological, and
functional principles determine spatial language, shape human visuo-spatial
perception and influence the perception of information visualization. We will
also explore the impacts of spatial abilities on learning. Results of several
recent studies from our Lab will be presented in detail.

of East Anglia, UK
Prof. Cees van Leeuwen, Laboratory for Perceptual Dynamics, KU Leuven, Belgium

This is the closing event of Lab’s project “Topological Modelling of
Structural Alignment: A Topological and Experimental Analysis of Information
Visualisation”.
The project is supported by University of Latvia Donor SIA “Mikrotīkls”. 
Foundation of the University of Latvia is administrator of this donation.


Call for Papers:

In our workshop, we will discuss the ways geometric, topological, and
functional principles determine spatial language, shape human visuo-spatial
perception and influence the perception of information visualization. We will
also explore the impacts of spatial abilities on learning. Results of several
recent studies from our Lab will be presented in detail.

In our workshop we will focus and welcome submissions on the following topics:

- Features of processing topological and geometric information in respect to
information visualization and selection of spatial expressions
- Different forms of geometry and their impact on visuo-spatial processing and
spatial language
- Strength of invariants in geometric and topological structures
- Similarity and structural alignment
- Generation of units in perception - topological or geometric?
- Methodological aspects (formal modeling of geometric and topological
systems, morphometry, issues of data collection and analysis etc.)
- Representation of space in language: geometric, topological and functional
constraints

Contributions on all areas of spatial language are welcome. In particular,
studies showing the interaction between geometric and functional knowledge.
