Meeting Description:

The annual international conference of young researchers in the field of
lingusitics and related disciplines held at Palacký University, Olomouc, the
Czech Republic.

While the more or less distant historical periods are called the “Age of
Steam”, “Enlightenment” or “Information Age”, the present-day era might be
nicknamed “the Age of Motion”: Europe and the Middle East witness new
migration of peoples; Eurocitizens move throughout the Eurospace seeking new
jobs and education; billions of words fly daily from one continent to another
on the social networks; and the concept of gender is no more perceived in a
dichotomic way only.

- What is the present-day Czech language heading towards? What changes is it
undergoing when in touch with different linguistic systems?
- What is the contemporary status of English as a lingua franca?
- To describe the world in motion, what language is used by politicians,
media, bloggers and YouTubers?
- How does artificial intelligence—smart phones, satnav, self check-out
machines, translators—talk to us?
- What kind of signs dominate social networks? How many likes can you get for
an icon, an index, and a symbol?
- Does language reflect a modern concept of gender? Can we manage on masculine
and feminine?
- What is the role of the Czech language outside Czechia and how do the
incomers learn to speak Czech? What motivates foreigners to study Czech? What
are the current trends in teaching Czech for foreigners?
- How do translators feel as professionals “between two linguistic worlds”?
How do they tackle the prejudice “Google translates it all!”?

How are the above-mentioned issues tackled by sociolinguistics,
psycholinguistics, pragmatics, ethnolinguistics, intercultural and contrastive
linguistics? How are they addressed by translators and interpreters? What are
the opinions of teachers and lecturers in the field of humanities?
