Host Institution:
Website: http://fs-lup.uni-koeln.de/flsc.html

Dates: 22-Jul-2018 - 26-Jul-2018
Location: Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Focus: This summer school will focus intensively on three of the aspects of forensic linguistics: authorship profiling and attribution; discourse analysis; and language and meaning.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate

Description:
The summer school "Forensic Linguistics Short Course" addresses subjects
within the broadly defined discipline of forensic linguistics. We work with
authentic data and use real cases to illustrate theory. We wish for a high
degree of participant involvement and encourage critical inquiry and debate.

The international program offers theoretical and applied introductions on
topics in forensic linguistics as well as lectures, poster presentations, and
an excursion.

Invited scholars are members of the Centre for Forensic Linguistics at Aston
University - the first of its kind in the world. It combines leading-edge
research and investigative practice with teaching and training in forensic
linguistics. Research at the Centre involves all aspects of forensic
linguistics from how the police and the courts can best work with interpreters
to the development and refinement of methods for identifying the author of
disputed forensic texts. Members have published widely and have lectured about
their research in some 30 countries.

Each session of this summer school will be led by one of the following
scholars:

Dr Ria Perkins graduated from Aston University's Master's programme in Applied
Linguistics with Forensic Linguistics. Her PhD focused on native language
identification in online Persian-English texts from 'weblogistan' and her
current research is centred around linguistic issues in online radicalisation.
She is working at the Centre for Forensic Linguistics as a research associate.

Dr Isabel Picornell is a fraud examiner working from the Channel Islands. Her
research examined linguistic cues to deception in written witness statements
and devised a method for identifying deceptive linguistic strategies. She
recently provided an expert report on such deception in a UK asylum appeal.

Dr Nicci MacLeod holds an MA (Distinction) in Forensic Linguistics from
Cardiff University - where she was also awarded the Dell Hymes Commendation
for Sociolinguistics - and a PhD from Aston University. She was employed as
Research Fellow on the project 'Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641
Depositions' at the University of Aberdeen, before returning to Aston in 2010
as a Research Associate in the Centre for Forensic Linguistics. She has worked
on projects in the areas of authorship analysis of short form texts, modelling
online identities, and the BAAL funded Applying Linguistics to Police
Interviewing. She is currently employed on the ESRC-funded project Assuming
identities Online. Her research interests lie in the linguistic performance of
identity and the manifestation of power through linguistic structures,
particularly in legal and investigative contexts.
