Subject: Syntax: Post Doc, University of Chicago, USA

University or Organization: University of Chicago
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Illinois, USA
Job Title: Postdoctoral Scholar
Job Rank: Instructor; Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Syntax

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago is seeking to hire
a scholar in syntax. We are looking for a candidate whose primary research and
teaching will bring to our Department an intellectual perspective and set of
tools that enhance (and potentially complement) our existing strengths in
syntactic theory and related fields such as morphology, semantics,
psycholinguistics, and linguistic fieldwork and documentation. The successful
candidate will play a key role in advising and teaching in the Department’s
curriculum in syntax and related fields, and in sustaining our vibrant
community of language-oriented scholars.

A goal of the search is to increase the diversity of the Department of
Linguistics and we therefore welcome applicants who come from groups that are
historically underrepresented in syntax, such as black/African American,
Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native. Successful candidates will
initially be appointed for two years as a Provosts Postdoctoral Scholar at the
rank of Instructor, which is a tenure-track faculty position. This initial
period is intended to serve in lieu of a postdoctoral appointment. During this
time, the successful candidate will teach one class per year, receive research
support, and participate in programming designed to help support them in their
progress toward promotion; as tenure-track faculty, they will participate as
well as in all other aspects of the work of the department, including advising
students. Instructors will ordinarily be put up for promotion to Assistant
Professor at the end of this initial term.

Candidates are required to have completed all of the requirements for the PhD
by the position’s expected start date, which is July 1, 2018, and must be no
more than three years beyond receiving that degree by the start date of the
fellowship.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, research and
teaching statements, teaching evaluations, and two representative research
papers. In their cover letter, candidates should address how their work and
appointment at the University of Chicago would address the diversity goals of
the position. Applicants should also request for three letters of
recommendation to be uploaded to the application site.

Applicants must submit all materials electronically at the link provided below
for posting 03729. Letters of reference will be solicited by the Department
after the search committee has reviewed the initial applications. The
committee will begin to review applications on June 6, 2018 and will continue
until the position is filled or the search is closed. For questions about the
position please see the contact information provided below.

Position is contingent on budgetary approval.

Opportunity/Disabled/Veterans Employer and does not discriminate on the basis
