Meeting Description:

LASPRL 2019 seeks to bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines
who are interested in sharing their expertise on linguistic attitudes, and
discussing and comparing their extensive empirical and theoretical findings,
so as to accomplish a synergy of perspectives and approaches that emphasize
the role of language attitude practices in dealing with demanding situations
emerging in intergroup encounters involving Spanish, Portuguese and the
related language they are in contact with in the 21st Century.

The majority of the world’s population resides in contexts that are becoming
increasingly multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multi-cultural. Many Spanish and
Portuguese societies coexist with indigenous communities as it occurs in many
Latin America countries; other groups, instead, have chosen to live in the
diaspora where, as immigrants, they are in contact with other cultures and/ or
languages around the world.

A major goal of this conference is to bring together scholars from a wide
range of disciplines who are interested in sharing their expertise on
linguistic attitudes and in discussing and comparing their extensive empirical
and theoretical findings, so as to accomplish a synergy of perspectives and
approaches that emphasize the role of language attitude practices in dealing
with demanding situations emerging in intergroup encounters involving Spanish,
Portuguese and the related language they are in contact with in the 21st
Century.
