Host Institution: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Website: http://sites.google.com/site/seclii2018/

Dates: 25-Sep-2018 - 27-Sep-2018

Focus: SECL II's sessions will include a) practice to design off-line and on-line linguistic experiments, b) programming practice for corpus construction and data manipulation and analysis (using XML and R) and c) practical introduction to statistical modelling of linguistic data (e.g. mixed effects models using R). For both experimental and corpus linguistic sessions, data sets from real studies will be used and analysed.
Minimum Education Level: PhD

Description:
After last year's success of SECL, this year our school expands to include a
three-day compact course on experimental and corpus linguistics. The
participants will acquire the necessary knowledge to handle corpora and
experimental data sets for research and teaching purposes. The sessions will
involve lectures and lab practice. Sessions will include a) practice to design
off-line and on-line linguistic experiments, b) programming practice for
corpus construction and data manipulation and analysis (using XML and R) and
c) practical introduction to statistical modelling of linguistic data (e.g.
mixed effects models using R). For both experimental and corpus linguistic
sessions, data sets from real studies will be used and analysed.

No prior knowledge of programming or software tools for experimental
linguistics is required. However, before entering the school, applicants are
expected to have already gone over each course's literature list and practice
tasks (to be announced in the schedule section). The instruction will be
carried out in English. Participants will also receive a Certificate of
Completion.
