Job Location: Michigan, USA
Web Address: http://linglang.msu.edu/
Job Title: Open Rank Position in Semantics
Job Rank: Rank Open

Specialty Areas: Semantics

Description:

Michigan State University invites applications for an open rank academic-year
position in semantics within the Department of Linguistics and German, Slavic,
Asian, and African Languages, beginning August 16, 2019. Appointment will be
made at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure, or tenure track
Assistant Professor. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the
qualifications and record of the successful candidate.

We are interested in candidates who have a publishing record commensurate with
their rank—in top academic venues in semantics, and who will continue to
produce research of excellent quality that will have a high impact on the
field.

Special consideration will be given to candidates whose research and scholarly
interests contribute to formal semantic theory in ways that complement and
connect with those of our current faculty. Applicants whose research engages
in fieldwork, cross-linguistic comparative work, or experimental approaches
are desirable.

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in linguistics by the time of
appointment, college-level teaching experience, native or near-native fluency
in English, and demonstrated excellence in research commensurate with the
relevant rank. Applicants seeking appointment at the Associate or Full
Professor rank with tenure must meet the criteria for the award of tenure at
Michigan State University, and those seeking appointment at the tenure track
assistant professor level must demonstrate the promise of getting tenured by
the end of the probationary period.

Duties will include active research, teaching, and service. The normal
teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate will be
expected to:
- Maintain a sustainable and forward-looking research program and make
significant scholarly contributions to linguistics,
- Teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in semantics,
plus introduction to linguistics, courses in the applicant’s other areas of
expertise, or courses in the College of Arts & Letters’ general education
program in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities (cisah.msu.edu),
- Supervise theses/dissertations and be an effective teacher and mentor of
both undergraduate and graduate students, and (iv) engage in institutional and
professional service.

Review of applications will begin November 20, 2018 and will continue until
the position is filled. Applications must be submitted electronically to the
Michigan State University Human Resources web site at the application link
provided below. Posting: 541002.

Qualified applicants should submit:
- A cover letter specifying the rank level applied for,
- Current curriculum vitae,
- A statement of research interests and teaching experience/interests that
highlights your alignment with our desired qualifications,
- One selected sample of research work,
- Names and email addresses of 4 potential referees at the same rank or
higher, and
- A summary of your experience with diversity in the classroom and/or in your
past or planned research endeavors, any experience mentoring diverse students
or community outreach initiatives, and an explanation of how you will advance
our goals of inclusive excellence.
