Meeting Description:

Politiche e Pratiche Per L'Educazione Linguistica, Il Multilinguismo e La
Comunicazione Interculturale

VI Congresso Internazionale della Società di Didattica delle Lingue e
Linguistica Educativa (DILLE)

One of the fundamental aims of language education is to highlight the value of
diversity present in contexts of acquisition and learning. This is not only
important because education today requires knowledge and skills which are
necessary to exploit the potential of learners of different nationalities but
also because there are various reasons for which one learns a language,
usually determined by demands of social integration and work opportunities.
These issues have been explicated in several documents regarding linguistic
policies, published in Europe over the recent years. These underline the
importance of being knowledgeable in more languages, ideally from an early
age. In multilingual settings, one has to take advantage of resources
available, both to enhance the linguistic competencies of all learners and to
create opportunities for intercultural communication. In the meantime,
linguistic policies must be evaluated and renewed continuously for them to be
relevant for teachers and learners, thereby avoiding detachment from everyday
practice.

The Conference will seek to stimulate reflection and discussion on these
themes, on the basis of language education perspectives which have been
developed through work and initiatives carried out by DILLE. Contributions,
relevant to language teaching and learning, from those who approach these
issues from other points of view are also welcome.
