Description:

The Department of Writing and Language Studies invites applications for a
tenure track Assistant Professor commencing September 1, 2019. Candidates with
a PhD in Applied Linguistics (or closely related field) with an emphasis in
Second Language Acquisition or Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language
are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate
courses in the English degree, teaching and supervising graduate students,
conducting research, and carrying out service responsibilities.

The Department of Writing and Language Studies at UTRGV offers BA programs in
English and Spanish in conjunction with the Department of Literatures and
Cultural Studies. It also offers MA programs in English (Rhetoric,
Composition, Literacy Studies, and Linguistics), English as a Second Language,
and Interdisciplinary Studies in English. The Department brings together
linguistics, languages (including a wide variety of languages, such as French,
German, Chinese, and Arabic), and rhetoric/composition.

UTRGV faculty are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student

Minimum Qualifications: 
Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics or related field by time of hire; ABDs will be
considered but degree must be conferred by 9-1-19; Evidence of excellence or
promise of excellence in teaching; Evidence of excellence or promise of
excellence in research/scholarship.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications: 
Expertise in Second Language Acquisition and/or Theory and Practice of
Teaching English as a Second Language 

Preferred Qualifications: 
In addition to expertise in Second Language Acquisition and/or Teaching
English as a Second Language (Theory and Practice), the academic concentration
is open, but applicants with specialization in one or more of the following
areas will be viewed favorably: teaching ESL/EFL pedagogic courses,
multilingual/SLA or third language acquisition, or phonology and
pronunciation. Further, the ideal candidate will have an interest in research
related to/drawing from the linguistic resources of the Rio Grande Valley
region and have experience in teaching diverse ESL/EFL student populations,
graduate coursework in theoretical linguistics, and/or online course delivery.
