Meeting Description:

(Session of International Conference on Verbal Humor)

Although there has been an in-depth study of humor and its different
linguistic aspects (inferences, markers and indicators, humorous genres,
etc.), the approach to the phenomena of gender and identity remains in the
shadow.

It is worth noting we count with several approaches to gendered humor, such as
the outstanding research from Chiaro & Baccollini (eds.) (2014), which follows
the research path established by Walker (1981, 1988), Hay (2000), Crawford
(2003) or Kotthoff (2006). However, most of these studies focus on the social
or cultural function of gendered humor or on the discussion about the way
gender identity can be constructed, deconstructed or co-constructed through
humorous texts, without drawing attention to the linguistic elements used by
the speakers.

On the other hand, the existing literature on this issue is mainly focused on
the functions of humor and gender in conversations between men and women
(Lampert and Ervin-Tripp, 1998; Hay, 2000; Holmes, Marra & Burns, 2001; Holmes
& Marra, 2002; Holmes, 2003; Kotthoff, 2006; etc.). There is still a lack of
attention to performance humor, which includes stand-up comedy, parody and
cartoons, etc. (Gilbert, 2004).

Call for Papers:

The panel invites papers on all aspects of linguistics, including (but not
limited to) the following topics:

- Gender and identity construction through humor
- Men and women discourse and humor
- Humor as a tool for change in the conception of gender and identity ¡
- Subversive humor
- Feminist humor
- Humor, gender and audiovisual translation
