Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto invites
applications for admission to our MA and PhD programs for Fall 2019.

The department has strengths in theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics,
psycholinguistics, fieldwork on understudied languages, and interfaces across
these areas. The faculty has specializations in a wide range of methodologies,
both qualitative and quantitative. The department’s open door policy allows
students to explore their research interests across sub-disciplines, gaining
training in multiple approaches, and shaping their own research projects.
Interface across diverse areas of linguistics is highly encouraged.

This fall, the department celebrates fifty great years of research, teaching,
and community (http://utlinguistics50.ca/). Building on this proud tradition
of excellence, the department is in the midst of an exciting period of faculty
expansion. This year, the department welcomed two new members to our graduate
faculty, Barend Beekhuizen (computational linguistics) and Keir Moulton
(syntax, semantics, experimental linguistics). This enrichment builds on five
new hires in the last three years- Susana Béjar (morphology, syntax), Derek
Denis (sociolinguistics), Nathan Sanders (phonology, sign language), Jessamyn
Schertz (phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics), and Guillaume Thomas
(semantics, pragmatics). The department is currently in the process of hiring
an additional three faculty members who will join the department from Fall
2019 in the following three areas: syntax/semantics of indigenous languages,
theoretical/laboratory phonology, and language acquisition/processing in
syntax/semantics.

The current faculty and their primary research areas include the following:

- THEORETICAL LINGUISTICS, with an emphasis on formal methods in morphology,
semantics, syntax, phonetics, phonology, and pragmatics. The continuing
faculty include: Susana Béjar (morphology, syntax), M. Cristina Cuervo
(syntax), Michela Ippolito (semantics), Peter Jurgec (phonology), Arsalan
Kahnemuyipour (syntax), Yoongjung Kang (phonetics, phonology), Alexei Kochetov
(phonetics), Keir Moulton (syntax, semantics), Keren Rice (phonology,
morphology), Nathan Sanders (phonetics, phonology), and Guillaume Thomas
(semantics, pragmatics).

- PSYCHOLINGUISTICS, with a focus on language acquisition and processing of
natural language. The continuing faculty include: Barend Beekhuizen
(computational linguistics), Daphna Heller (sentence processing), Philip
Monahan (speech perception, neurolinguistics), Ana Teresa Pérez-Leroux
(language acquisition), Jessamyn Schertz (bilingualism, perceptual shift).

- SOCIOLINGUISTICS, with a focus on language variation and change. The
continuing faculty include: Derek Denis (language variation,
discourse-pragmatics), Atiqa Hachimi (language and gender), Naomi Nagy
(heritage languages), and Sali A. Tagliamonte (Canadian dialects and Internet
language).

- The department also has a strong interest in fieldwork and the study of
understudied languages in Canada and the world. Faculty with fieldwork
research projects include: Suzi Lima (Kawaiwete, Brazil; Yudja, Brazil), Keren
Rice (Dene, Canada), Nathan Sanders (sign language), and Guillaume Thomas
(Mbyá Guaraní, South America).

All graduate students in our program receive funding packages of no less than
$17,500 (for 2019-20, with a planned increase of guaranteed minimum to $18,500
by 2021-22), plus tuition and fees, for one year in the MA program and four
years in the PhD program. Additional funding is often available through
Research Assistantships on the many funded faculty research projects.
