Linguistic Field(s): Pragmatics

Meeting Description:

Understanding humor as a difficult notion to define from just one scientific
perspective, and conceiving it as a multidisciplinary phenomenon, in this
panel, verbal humor will be addressed as a way to represent reality through
the use of an apparently illogical element that, in its interpretation,
implies a comic effect (Martínez Egido, 2016: 162). And not only does this
happen in text genres, but also in those regarded as not humorous or serious,
but which introduce pinches of humor in their development (Kotthoff, 2007;
Martínez Egido, 2014; Verschueren, 2017; Martínez Egido, 2018). This use of
humor in these text types and genres could be owed to several reasons, as
well, as be produced in a great variety of linguistic forms, and seek
different goals. All these issues, in a way or another, may positively (or
not) contribute so that the text coherence, cohesion and adequacy are the
right and enforceable ones in this text type and genre.

In this panel, we welcome contributions related to humor in texts classified
as non-humorous, but also in conventional humorous texts, which address any of
the following aspects:

- Genres of humor: jokes, stand-up comedy, parody, humor cartoons
- Interrelationships between humorous texts and serious texts.
- Text typology of humorous texts and serious texts with a pinch of humor.
- Humor and languages for specific purposes.
- The linguistic construction and interpretation of humor: linguistic and
extralinguistic devices of humor in humorous texts and serious texts.
- Effects and purposes of humor in serious texts and humorous texts.
