Description:

The Second Language Acquisition Lab and the Neurolinguistics and Language
Processing Lab at the University of Kansas seek applications from prospective
Ph.D. students who wish to study language processing and language development
in both native speakers and adult second language learners.

Dr. Robert Fiorentino and Dr. Alison Gabriele are accepting applications for a
Graduate Research Assistant position on an NSF-funded, EEG study which
examines referential dependencies in English and Spanish. An abstract is given
below.

Applicants should wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Linguistics and should have
some experience with designing and carrying out experimental studies.
Proficiency in Spanish and a background in statistical analysis is preferred
but not required. The GRA will assist with all aspects of data collection,
data analysis, and dissemination of results. Interested applicants should
follow the standard online procedures for applying to the Ph.D. program in
Linguistics. Please mention your interest in the GRA position and your
relevant background experience in your application statement. Fellowship
packages include five years of guaranteed support.

Please contact Drs. Robert Fiorentino (fiorentino at ku.edu) and Alison Gabriele
(gabriele at ku.edu) if you have questions.

NSF#1749143: Examining Native Language Variability and its Effects on Second
Language Processing: An Event-Related Potentials Investigation of Referential
Dependencies
This project examines the extent to which there is a link between language
abilities in a first and second language with the goal of providing a better
understanding of the factors that predict successful comprehension across
languages. The project examines the processing of pronouns such as ''she'' in
short stories as a test case for complex language processing. Linking a
pronoun such as ''she'' with a noun that has come much earlier in the
discourse has long been recognized as challenging for both native speakers and
second language learners but the two bodies of research have proceeded
independently. The current study examines the processing of pronouns in two
groups of learners, English-speaking learners of Spanish and Spanish-speaking
learners of English, testing all participants in both their first and second
languages. The project uses event-related potentials (ERP), a measure that
allows examination of the precise mechanisms used during language processing.
All participants will also take an extensive battery of individual difference
measures. The goal is to develop a better understanding of the contexts and
conditions under which native speakers and second language learners are
successful and to examine whether processing in a second language is
qualitatively similar or different from processing a native language.

About Linguistics at the University of Kansas:
The Linguistics Department at KU has particular strengths in experimental
phonetics and phonology, first and second language acquisition,
psycholinguistics, the cognitive neuroscience of language, and linguistic
fieldwork. The department has both head-mounted and remote eye trackers, an
EEG laboratory, and on the KU medical center campus, cortical MEG, fetal MEG
and MRI systems. The Linguistics faculty is committed to excellence in
mentoring. Students are actively encouraged and mentored to present their work
at conferences, publish research in journals, and submit applications for
external grant funding. Successful applicants are guaranteed five-years of
full tuition, a stipend, and travel support. For more information, please see
