Description:

The Linguistics Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara
seeks to hire a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Linguistics of African
America. The appointment is anticipated to begin July 1, 2019; an earlier
start date may also be possible. The position is renewable for a second year
contingent on satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will have an active research program in any area of
African American linguistics. Applicants may specialize in any subfield(s) of
linguistics and in any of the linguistic varieties of Africa and the diaspora
that are used within the United States and/or elsewhere in the Americas.

We seek candidates whose research has the potential to engage with the
departmental focus on discourse-functional approaches to language and who can
interact with colleagues and students in one or more core areas of our
department, including sociocultural linguistics, linguistic structure,
phonetics and phonology, quantitative approaches, and/or language
documentation and revitalization.

Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and will be expected
to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the linguistics of African
America and related areas, as well as to contribute to the department’s majors
in Linguistics and in Language, Culture, and Society. A strong desideratum is
a commitment to the academic mentoring of African American undergraduate and
graduate students as well as students from other groups underrepresented
within linguistics and the academy generally. For more information about the

The minimum requirement to be considered as an applicant is the completion, by
the time of application, of all requirements for a Ph.D. in linguistics or a
related field, other than the dissertation (or equivalent). A Ph.D. in
linguistics or a related field is required by the time of appointment. Related
fields that will be considered include but are not limited to anthropology,
English, education, and speech and hearing sciences.
