Meeting Description:

(Session of International Conference on Historical Linguistics 24)

Full title: Gaining Insights from Negative Evidence - Argumentation in
historical linguistics

This workshop focusses on contrastive situations where a particular structural
linguistic change is unattested in one variety or bundle of varieties (e.g., a
dialect, a language, or a branch of languages) in contrast to its attestation
in another closely related variety (or varieties). The goal is to explore
whether we can draw insights from negative evidence - i.e. from the
non-occurrence of a change against the backdrop of its occurrence in a closely
related variety - in a way which circumvents some of the epistemic
difficulties that arise in accounting for why a particular change did occur.
In a nutshell, this workshop asks Why not? rather than Why?

For the full abstract, please see the conference website.
