Subject: 3rd Workshop on the Use of Computational Methods in the Study of Endangered Languages

Full Title: 3rd Workshop on the Use of Computational Methods in the Study of Endangered Languages
Short Title: ComputEL-3

Date: 26-Feb-2019 - 27-Feb-2019
Location: Honolulu, Hawai'i, USA
Contact Person: Antti Arppe
Meeting Email: computel.workshop at gmail.com
Web Site: https://computel-workshop.org/computel-3/

Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Computational Linguistics; Language Documentation; Lexicography; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 22-Oct-2018

Meeting Description:

The ComputEL-3 workshop will focus on the use of computational methods in the
study, support, and revitalization of endangered languages. The primary aim of
the workshop is to continue narrowing the gap between computational linguists
interested in working on methods for endangered languages, field linguists
working on documenting these languages, and the language communities who are
striving to maintain their languages.

We take seriously the goal of reaching all relevant communities. To support
this goal, ComputEL-3 aims to alternate between co-location with computational
linguistics conferences and with language documentation conferences.
ComputEL-3 will take place 26-27 February, 2019, immediately preceding the 6th
International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC6)
hosted by the University of Hawai'i.

2nd Call for Papers:

Important News/Changes
- Submission Deadline Postponed to Monday, October 22, 2018
- Submission Website is open:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=computel3

Papers are invited which explore the interface and intersection of
computational linguistics, documentary linguistics, and community-based
language revitalization efforts. We encourage submissions which:

(i) examine the use of specific methods in the analysis of data from
low-resource languages, with a focus on endangered languages, or propose new
methods for analysis of such data,

(ii) propose new models for the collection, management, and deployment of data
in endangered language settings, or

(iii) consider what concrete steps are required to allow for a more fruitful
interaction between computer scientists, documentary linguists, and language
communities.

The intention of the workshop is not merely to allow for the presentation of
research on these topics, but also to continue building a network of
computational linguists, documentary linguists, and community language
activists who are able to effectively join together to serve their common
interests.

Submissions:

In line with our goal of reaching different academic communities, we offer two
different modes of submission under two different tracks: (a) linguistic
community perspective and (b) academic perspective. The selected track will
not influence the likelihood of acceptance. Camera-ready versions will have
the same length ranges for both submission tracks, according to the original
Submission Format (see Submission Formats and Proceedings below).

Submission Site and Deadline:

Submissions must be uploaded via:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=computel3 no later than October 22,
2018, 11:59PM (UTC-11, time zone of American Samoa). Please indicate clearly
which of the two tracks and two modes (Extended abstract or Full short/long
paper) you are submitting to.

All submissions must be anonymous and will be peer-reviewed by the Scientific
Committee. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by November 12, 2018.

Submission formats

Either of the two submission formats (A or B) can be used for submissions to
both (a) the linguistic community and (b) the academic tracks (see above). The
selection of submission format will not influence the likelihood of
acceptance.

A. Extended abstract:

Please submit anonymous abstracts of up to 1500 words.

B. Full paper (short or long):

Please submit (anonymously) either long papers (max. 8 pages + references) or
short papers (max. 4 pages + references) according to the style and formatting
guidelines provided in the CompuEL-3 Style Files (which have template files
for both LaTeX and Microsoft Word, cf.
https://computel-workshop.org/computel/computel-3/call-for-papers/). Authors
will be allowed one extra page for the final version.

Proceedings:

Authors whose presentations are selected for the conference will be eligible
to submit their papers for online publication via the open-access ACL
Anthology. Full and short papers will be allotted 1 additional page
(altogether 5 and 9 pages) excluding references. Extended abstracts will be
alloted 5 pages (according to the short paper format), excluding references.
Camera-ready versions of the articles will be due on January 21, 2019.

Funding

We anticipate being able to support travel costs in some cases for students
whose papers are accepted as well as scholars from lower income countries.

Important Dates:

Mon, 22-Oct-2018 : Deadline for submission of short/long full papers or short
abstracts
Mon, 12-Nov-2018: Notification of acceptance
Mon, 21-Jan-2019 : Deadline for camera-ready versions of papers
