Description:

The West Virginia University Department of World Languages, Literatures, and
Linguistics invites applications for a faculty position in Chinese
Studies beginning August 2019. Depending on qualifications and seniority, the
appointment may be made at the advanced assistant professor level, at the
tenured associate professor level, or higher. Applicants with exceptional
qualifications will be nominated for the J. Vance & Florence Highland Johnson
Professor in Chinese Studies. 

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities: 
- Teaching Chinese language classes, content classes at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, and potentially online classes; 
- Maintaining an active research agenda; and 
- Coordinating the Chinese studies program and graduate teaching assistants. 

This position, which is based on a nine-month contract, requires demonstrated
excellence in university-level teaching with abilities in coordination and/or
program administration; a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Chinese, Linguistics,
Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field; ability to maintain an active
research program; and excellent communication skills in both English and
Chinese. 
 
The department offers M.A. degree programs in Spanish, Linguistics, and TESOL
(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), enrolling approximately
60-70 full-time graduate students from around the world, with the majority of
those holding teaching assistantships. We also offer B.A.s and minors in a
range of programs, including French, German, Spanish, Chinese Studies, Italian
Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian Studies, and Slavic and East European
Studies. Additionally, we offer minors in Foreign Literature/Culture in
Translation, Japanese Studies, Arabic Studies, Linguistics, and TESOL. 
 
WVU is a comprehensive land-grant university that enrolls 29,000 students. It
is classified as “highest research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation. The
Morgantown campus is situated along the Monongahela River and Rail Trail is
within easy traveling distance of Washington, D.C. to the east, Pittsburgh,
