Description:

PhD Position open:
The Institute for General Linguistics, Department of Quantitative Linguistics
of the University of Tübingen is looking for one graduate student (E13 TV-G-U,
65%-part-time) for the Project “Articulation of morphologically complex words”
(PI Prof. Dr. Harald Baayen), part of the DFG Research Unit “Spoken
Morphology”. The candidate aims for a doctoral  degree in linguistics. The
starting date is January 1, 2018 and the position will be funded for 3 years
including social benefits.

The “Spoken Morphology” Research Unit is a group of 7 projects affiliated with
the University of Tübingen, the University of Düsseldorf and the MPI Nijmegen.
Its aim is to investigate the morphology-phonetics interaction at the
segmental and prosodic level. Due to its interdisciplinary research focus, the
Research Unit provides a fruitful  environment for PhD candidates with regular
meetings and methodological workshops.

Expectations:
Applicants are expected to write a dissertation based on independent research.
They will be encouraged and receive financial support to participate in
conferences and summer schools and to conduct empirical research.

The ideal candidate
- Has an interest in phonetics and / or cognitive sciences, 
- Has a background in statistics and / or  programming (e.g. R, python)  
- Is capable to acquire new skills and solve problems

The PhD candidate will investigate the morphology-phonetics interaction using
Ultrasound, Electromagnetic Articulography as well corpus investigations.
Target languages are English, German and Polish. Fluency or knowledge of
Polish is not obligatory. The PhD candidate will visit the Adam-Mickiewicz
University in Poznan, Poland, to perform phonetic experiments.

Application Requirements:
Applicants should have an M.A. in linguistics, or equivalent, with the degree
completed by December 1, 2018.

Required documents:
- Representative sample of research work (i.e. the M.A. thesis and 2 two
advanced seminar papers);
- Two names of references who may be contacted by the search committee;
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) and Transcripts (German or English version) of their
BA and MA courses
- BA degree & MA.degree (to be handed in the latest by December 1, 2018, if
not already available by September, 2018).
