NSF REU Site/UCSB-HBCU Scholars in Linguistics Program

1) How African-Americans communicate?

2) The experiences of African-Americans in higher education around the U.S.? 

3) Spending your summer doing research with other undergraduate scholars at UC Santa Barbara as well as take courses at the Linguistic Institute in Davis? 

4) Preparation for graduate school: GRE prep course and help with fellowship applications including the Ford Foundation, National Science Foundation, graduate applications, and others?

If so, apply to join us in Summer 2019 at UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis for the Talking College/UCSB-HBCU Scholars in Linguistics Program! This program is jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates and the University of California HBCU Initiative.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate


Special Qualifications:
Participants must be a major or minor in linguistics or a closely related field.


Description:
The NSF REU Site: Talking College and the UCSB-HBCU Scholars in Linguistics
Program are a joint initiative of the Department of Linguistics at the
University of California, Santa Barbara that brings together undergraduates
from UC Santa Barbara, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and other
institutions throughout the United States. During this summer research
program, students will receive training in linguistics, preparation for
graduate school, and experience in conducting original research that extends
their understanding of African-American language, culture, and community.

Program participants will spend the first half of the program at UC Davis for
the LSA Summer Institute, accompanied by program faculty and graduate student
mentors from UC Santa Barbara. Participants will take courses at the
Linguistic Institute, conduct research at UC Davis and other colleges and
universities in the area, and confer with experts about their work.
Participants will be based at UC Santa Barbara for the remainder of the
program to conduct research at UCSB and at other institutions in Southern
California.

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a $4,000 stipend paid over several installments throughout the summer.
