Assistant/Associate Professor of Language Education/Secondary/Multilingual
Populations

The Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Special Education in the Curry
School of Education & Human Development at the University of Virginia is
seeking applications for an assistant or associate professor in the area of
Secondary Teacher Education. Candidates who focus on the literacy and/or
reading development of bilingual/multilingual populations at the secondary
level are encouraged to apply. The incumbent collaborates with program and
department faculty implementing teacher preparation programs and designing and
delivering doctoral preparation. Other duties include coordinating the
Language Education in Multilingual Contexts doctoral program, mentoring
doctoral students; advising undergraduate and graduate students on courses of
study; and supervising graduate students' practica and related learning
activities. A rigorous and funded line of research, working with
interdisciplinary faculty across the school and the University is expected.

Requirements:
A Ph.D. in Education, Reading Education, TESOL/ESL/Second Language Education,
Educational Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or a related area with an
emphasis in bi/multilingual, English learners and/or second language
acquisition and pedagogy is required by the start-date of the appointment.
Ideal candidates' scholarship focuses on bi/multilingual contexts and
ESL-related work, with a specific interest in adolescent literacy and/or
reading development. We will prioritize individuals whose scholarship
demonstrates a strong link between theory and practice among preK-12 students,
teachers, and/or policy makers. Applicants for the assistant professor level
must provide evidence of scholarship that has potential to obtain extramural
funding. Applicants for the tenured associate professor must have an
established national reputation, a documented line of research focused on
bi/multilingual populations, and a track record of existing and sustained
extramural funding. 

Additional requirements include:
Three years classroom teaching experience in preK-12 ESL, dual language,
and/or content-area settings with multilingual populations; knowledge of ESL
and content-area scholarship and pedagogies appropriate for multilingual
learners at the secondary level; experience developing and designing
curricula; evidence of excellent university-level teaching in a teacher
education program.

Experience working with culturally and/or linguistically diverse students and
some experience with online teaching is preferred. Experience supervising
student teachers in a teacher education program is also preferred, as is the
ability to use technology in innovative ways to enhance instruction and to
teach online. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven record of
collaboration with diverse groups of students and faculty.
