Linguistic Field(s): Computational Linguistics; Language Documentation; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 15-Feb-2019

Call for Papers:

Crowdsourcing language data with smartphones has become increasingly popular
in the last decade. Collecting data with this new technology represents an
innovative paradigm with great potential for monitoring linguistic behaviour
in real time: smartphones allow for large-scale and rapid collection of
written text, speech, or imagery alike, and the devices are powerful,
computationally-speaking, and overall unobtrusive to the user. Until today,
there have been no reflections from the linguistics community on the
opportunities and challenges associated with smartphone methodologies. This
special collection of Linguistics Vanguard aims to rectify this by bringing
together contributions from the researchers who are currently driving this new
research paradigm.

The focus of the special collection is the use of smartphones to collect data
for linguistic research. We are looking for contributions that present the
methodology of the project, a consideration of methodological challenges (such
as subject recruitment), data validation, data management and storage, and
dissemination of findings. We also ask that contributions include new research
from the project, and propose future directions for the use of smartphone
technology in linguistic research.

Linguistics Vanguard is an online, multi-modal journal and authors are
encouraged to include interactive content, such as audio, video, software, raw
data, etc. For this special collection we would therefore like to urge
contributors who are able to to openly share (links to) the collected data or
other parts of the project (such as openly available coding scripts, designs
etc.) Because the journal is online-only, special collections are ''virtual
collections'' linked by shared keywords. Details about the journal can be
found at www.degruyter.com/lingvan.
Authors (and journal subscribers) will have free access to the entire special
collection. There are no publication costs. All authors may post a pdf on
their personal website a year after publication. Information on manuscript
submission can be found here: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/lingvan
Questions can be directed to the Area Editor Remi van Trijp, or Adrian Leemann
(a.leemann at lancaster.ac.uk) or Nanna Haug Hilton (n.h.hilton at rug.nl)
