Description:

At the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen (Norway), there
is a vacant permanent position as Associate Professor in Japanese language,
subject to funding. The starting date for the position is 1 April 2019.

The Department of Foreign Languages (IF) offers programs in Arabic, Chinese,
English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish Language and
Latin America studies. The academic staff at the Department work within this
range of programs and conduct their research and teaching in the following
disciplines: literature, language/linguistics, civilization/history and
teacher education. The Department currently employs more than fifty academic
staff, eleven administrative staff members, four postdocs, around twenty PhD
candidates and also others in shorter temporary positions.

The Japanese program currently has one professor, one associate professor in
addition to the announced position, and also one PhD fellow. All positions are
within the field of language/linguistics. There are courses offered at
bachelor level but the intention is to develop master’s studies as well.

The Department and the Faculty of Humanities host several research groups
(https://www.uib.no/en/hf/116247/research-groups-faculty-humanities) and have
formal agreements of exchange and collaboration with countries in Europe,
Africa, Asia, North and Latin America, as well as collaboration with other
Norwegian universities and university colleges.

Teaching and research responsibilities:
Teaching and research responsibilities for the announced position are within
Japanese language/linguistics. The responsibilities include research,
supervision, teaching, course development, and student assessment on all
levels, as well as administrative duties related to the program and the
Department.

The successful candidate must be able to teach a broad range of courses in
Japanese language/linguistics at all levels from beginner’s to master’s level.
 
The successful candidate is expected to participate in the continued
development of the research environment, and competency in project leadership,
coordination of research activities and strategic research planning will be
valued. The successful applicant is expected to maintain and develop research
collaboration between the Japanese program at the University of Bergen and
other relevant national and international research communities.

The holder of the position is expected to establish residence in such a way as
to be able to participate in the work of the department on a daily basis, and
to comply with the rules and regulations applicable to the position.

One may apply for promotion to full professor after a competency assessment
based on scholarly merit according to the guidelines from The Norwegian
Association of Higher Education Institutions.
