Subject: Computational Linguisitics: PhD, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany

 Institution/Organization: Saarland University
Department: Department of Language Science and Technology
Web Address: http://www.lst.uni-saarland.de/

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The Department of Language Science and Technology at Saarland University is
pleased to invite applications for a PhD student position in the research
group on Computational Linguistics (Prof. Dr. Alexander Koller). The preferred
starting date is January 2019 or later.

The position will be part of the DFG project "Efficient statistical parsing
and decoding for expressive grammar formalisms using tree automata". In this
project, we take a unifying view on a variety of tasks in computational
linguistics, including syntactic and semantic parsing and natural language
generation. We develop efficient and accurate algorithms that can tackle all
of these problems in a uniform manner, by interpreting abstract syntactic
structures in different algebras. After completing a first project phase that
focused on the use of tree automata for describing these abstract syntactic
structures, we are currently primarily interested in supervised and
semi-supervised neural methods.

The appointment will be made on the German TV-L E13 scale (75%). The starting
salary of E13 75% is about 34,000 Euros per year and increases with
experience. The contract will be initially limited until November 2021, and
can be extended further.

Requirements:
A successful candidate should hold, or be about to complete, an MSc degree in
computational linguistics, computer science, or a related discipline. Relevant
expertise in the area of the project is desired. The applicant must be
proficient in English (spoken and written).

About the department:
Saarland University is one of the leading centers for computational
linguistics in Europe, and offers a dynamic and stimulating research
environment. The Department of Language Science and Technology organizes about
100 research staff in ten research groups in the fields of computational
linguistics, psycholinguistics, speech processing, and corpus linguistics
(http://www.lst.uni-saarland.de).

The department participates in the Collaborative Research Center 1102
"Information Density and Linguistic Encoding"
(http://www.sfb1102.uni-saarland.de) and is part of the Cluster of Excellence
"Multimodal Computing and Interaction" (http://www.mmci.uni-saarland.de). It
collaborates closely with top-ranked research institutions on the Saarland
University campus, including the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max
Planck Institute for Software Systems, the German Research Center for
Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and the Computer Science Department at
Saarland University.

Our researchers and students come from all over the world, and our primary
working language is English.

How to apply:
Please submit your application at the application link provided below.
Include a single PDF file with the following information:
- A statement of research interests that motivates why you are applying for
this position and what your research plans are;
- A full CV including your list of publications;
- Scans of transcripts and academic degree certificates;
- The names, affiliations, and e-mail addresses of two people who can provide
letters of reference for you.

Priority will be given to applications received by November 11, 2018.

If you have further questions, please email Alexander Koller at the
application provided below. Applications should NOT be emailed to this
address, but submitted through the online form.
