Subject: Semantics: PhD, ZAS Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft, Germany

 Institution/Organization: ZAS Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft
Department:
Web Address: http://www.leibniz-zas.de

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Semantics

Description:

The Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) invites applications
for a graduate student researcher for the project Speech Acts in Grammar and
Discourse (SPAGAD) funded by the European Research Council, with PI Manfred
Krifka. The SPAGAD project investigates semantic, syntactic, pragmatic,
discourse, social and acquisitional aspects of speech acts with the aim of
advancing theoretical models and our empirical knowledge.

The position should ideally start January 1, 2019. It is a half-time position,
pay level TöDV E13, running for 36 months.

The position will be concerned with the formal modeling of speech acts and
discourse phenomena within the overall framework of dynamic semantics,
building on the model of Commitment Spaces that is being developed by Krifka.
This should be in close connection to other work within the SPAGAD team. Work
in the SPAGAD project allows for writing a doctoral dissertation on some
aspect of the topic of speech acts, ideally under the supervision of Krifka at
Humboldt Universität Berlin. The successful applicant should have experience
in formal semantics and should have a good knowledge of logic and algebraic
modeling techniques; experience in formal pragmatics, modeling of discourse
phenomena and game theory would be helpful. The applicant is expected to
collaborate in a team of researchers that focuses on other aspects of speech
acts. Working knowledge of German is an advantage.

Please send, with subject: “SPAGAD Syntax Application”, a letter of intent
that states in particular the nature of your interest in the project and the
expertise that you could contribute, up to three articles by yourself
(including your Master's thesis), as well as an CV, in one pdf file to the
application email provided below. Please also provide names and e-mail
addresses for up to two potential letters of reference.

Application Deadline: 01-Oct-2018
