33rd International Conference of the Croatian Applied Linguistics Society

Expression and transfer of meaning are the foundations of the development of
language. Therefore, it is not surprising that the study of meaning is one of
the central issues that have preoccupied linguists since the very beginnings
of this scientific discipline, since the time when linguistics was taking
shape within the fold of philosophy, up until the present time when by
studying language and meaning we are trying to gain new insights into how the
human brain works. Contemporary linguistics approaches meaning through several
main stages, from Structuralist analysis of the relationship between
linguistic signs, over the short, and only seeming abandonment of the primacy
of meaning in relation to the expressive powers of combinatory forces of
grammatical structures, to the nowadays dominant cognitive-semantic research
which studies  meaning in language in relation to concepts (conceptualisation)
and other abilities and principles of the human mind. Throughout the history
of semantics one of the most intriguing issues has been the one of the
relationship between the individual and the linguistic community within the
framework of the wider relation sign-meaning. This vital, but
under-researched, relation is the topic of this year’s conference.

Meaning in Language - From Individual to Collective 

16 – 18 May 2019
Rijeka (Croatia)

Since semantics is a discipline that encompasses all linguistic levels it
stretches through both the synchronic and diachronic perspective, and, since
it is interdisciplinary, it irradiates into other areas that correspond to
linguistic communication. Therefore, we recommend the following three thematic
approaches:

(1) The relationship between the sign and the world (the real and the
possible)
(2) The relationship between the sign and other linguistic signs
(3) The relationship between the sign and the speaker from the a) pragmatic
and b) cognitive-semantic perspective (the relationship between the sign and
concept(s))

We also propose specific topics:

- Grammatical and grammaticalized meanings
- Grammatical approaches to the description of the meaning of word classes
- Semantic component in determining and describing word classes
- Challenging the concept of lexical and grammatical words
- Meaning on the morphological and syntagmatic level
- Phono-syntax
- Syntacto-semantics
- Metaphor, metonymy
- Imageability
- Discourse aspects of the collective in meaning
- Standardology and sociolinguistics – social meaning in language
- Linguistic change, mistake, innovation and meaning
- Meaning and the criteria of the language norm
- Semantic interpretations of individual structures and phenomena in a
linguistic community (paronymy, retronymy, etc.)
- Corpus linguistics approaches to meaning
- Intercultural communication and meaning
- Lexicological and lexicographic approaches to meaning
- Lexicographic procedures in the description of meaning
- Diachronic semantics
- Approaches to semantics in language teaching
- Meaning and multilingualism
- Translation studies approaches to meaning
- The role of mass media in the creation and change of meaning
- Terminology in semantics, etc.

Submissions will open on 1 October 2018, and the submission deadline is 15
November 2018. Detailed instructions about the submission process will be
given in the Second Call.

Presenters may submit only one paper proposal (as presenters or
co-presenters). Exceptions may be made under special circumstances.

Notification of acceptance: 10 January 2019.

Conference fee: 

Early bird (payment by 15 February 2019): 

Presenters: 90 €; Doctoral student presenters and participants: 60 €

Late payment (payment from 16 February until 15 March 2019):

Presenters: 116 €; Doctoral student presenters and participants: 90 €
